New data from GeoComply shows that more than one million sports betting accounts have been opened in New York just one week after the state's launch.
1.2 million active accounts were created across the five sportsbooks in the state between 8 January 2022 and 17 January, with 878,000 unique players. That's more than the combined population of New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
While only 9% of New Yorkers have ever placed a wager on a New Jersey sportsbook before, 88% of New Yorkers are completely new to legalized online sports betting. New Yorkers, on the other hand, have an average of 1.36 accounts with a single sportsbook.
Additionally, GeoComply data shows that in the two weekends leading up to and following the launch of New York, the Garden State averaged 12.6 million geolocation transactions.
Lindsay Slader, Managing Director of Gaming at GeoComply, said, "The momentum of New York's sports betting launch has continued and it is mostly home-grown.
" Sports betting is a new experience for the vast majority of our customers. New Yorkers are switching from illegal to legal sportsbooks, according to the data, and operators are doing a great job of luring new customers in.' Although New York hasn't disappointed us, the overall sports betting industry has wowed us. Throughout the Super Bowl, we'll be reporting on how many more records have been broken by GeoComply.
